About the client
The Kids Research Institute Australia is one of Australia’s leading child health research organisations, dedicated to improving the health, wellbeing, and development of children and young people through world-class research, education, and community partnerships. Working across a wide range of health and social issues, The Kids collaborates with researchers, clinicians, educators, and communities to drive meaningful, evidence-based change.
The need
Healthcare students often receive little formal training in LGBTQIA+ inclusive care, leaving many future practitioners feeling uncertain, underprepared, or fearful of getting it wrong. The Kids Research Institute identified an opportunity to help bridge this gap by creating an engaging learning experience for tertiary-level medical and psychology students.
The goal was to build learners’ confidence, capability, and understanding, while challenging assumptions and encouraging reflective, affirming practice. Importantly, the program needed to meet learners where they were – from highly engaged students through to those who felt reluctant or unsure – and create a safe, evidence-based pathway toward more inclusive healthcare practices.
The learning solution
In partnership with The Kids Research Institute, we co-designed Community in Practice: LGBTQIA+ Health Training — an interactive and story-driven learning experience focused on building inclusive healthcare capability for future medical and psychology professionals.
Rather than developing a traditional compliance-style module, we created a vibrant “community-scape” concept that learners could explore at their own pace. Built in Chameleon Creator, the experience uses storytelling, reflective practice, interactive scenarios, and practical tools to guide learners through.
We mapped the learning journey around real learner attitudes, motivations, and barriers identified during extensive stakeholder discovery workshops.
Key features of the solution include:
- Real-world healthcare scenarios and case-based learning activities
- A series of lived experience videos featuring LGBTQIA+ community members sharing personal healthcare stories
- Custom branding and illustrations, designed to create warmth, safety, and curiosity
- Vibrant “community-scape” illustrations and GIFs, immersing learners in an interactive digital town where they can visit and explore different learning locations
- Interactive assessments and reflective activities to reinforce behavioural change
- A highly visual and accessible learning environment optimised for tertiary learners
One of the most unique aspects of the project was the design approach. Learners navigate through themed locations such as Bedrock Bridge, Practice Park, Habit Hub, and Story Street, transforming the learning into a connected and human-centred experience rather than a static course.
The result is a learning experience that balances evidence-based education with empathy, reflection, and practical application — helping future healthcare professionals build safer, more inclusive environments for LGBTQIA+ communities.
The outcome
Community in Practice represents an important step toward embedding LGBTQIA+ inclusive care into future healthcare education.
The project created a strong foundation for long-term systemic change by equipping medical and psychology students with the language, confidence, and practical skills needed to provide affirming care in real-world healthcare settings. The program encourages learners to move beyond awareness and into action.
The collaboration also strengthened the ongoing partnership between Hungry Minds and The Kids Research Institute, showcasing the power of co-design, thoughtful learning strategy, and human-centred digital experiences in tackling complex social and healthcare challenges.
