South32 is a globally diversified mining and metals company. Their mission is to make a difference by developing natural resources, improving people’s lives now and for generations to come. They are committed to sustainability and social responsibility. Key offerings include mining of commodities such as alumina, aluminium, coal, manganese, nickel, silver, lead, and zinc.  

The need

 

South32 operates globally with complex business operations. They have leaders in both functional and operational spaces, including new and experienced leaders. Mid-level leaders often excel in technical aspects but require nurturing to develop people skills essential for leadership. South32 values a modern, influential leadership approach that emphasises coaching, support, and high performance. They aimed to build behaviours and expectations outlined in their LEAD model to address the unique challenges of mid-level leadership 

 

The learning solution

 

The learning solution for South32’s mid-level leaders focused on delivering a comprehensive programme using various methods and strategies. This included face-to-face interactive workshops, virtual social learning circles, and coaching conversations.  

 

The programme was divided into three full-day workshops; Think Like A Leader, Engage Like A Leader, Build Teams Like A Leader. Each day explored the latest modern leadership thinking on the variety of topics shown below.

 

Custom deliverables such as branded slide decks, activity cards, a facilitator guide, and a learning journal were developed. Additionally, a capability development tool and coaching conversation guides were also supplied. 

The outcome

We delivered a programme that exceeded all internal expectations, on time and on budget. South32 reported that working with us was a true delight, and they were thrilled with the thoughtful and comprehensive way we delivered this program. Every detail was exactly on point. The program will be rolled out globally to all mid-level leaders in the months and years ahead.
