About The Client
Consent Labs is a national youth-led not-for-profit organisation delivering evidence-based consent and respectful relationships education across Australia. Their programs empower young people and the communities around them to actively challenge the culture surrounding sexual violence through practical, engaging and research-informed education. Working across schools, tertiary institutions and broader community settings, Consent Labs combines lived experience, youth voice and prevention-focused education to create safer and more respectful environments.

The Need
Consent Labs engaged Hungry Minds to help transform their highly valued face-to-face consent education workshops into a scalable online learning experience for tertiary students.

The introduction of the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence created an urgent need for universities to provide high-quality prevention education at scale. While Consent Labs’ existing workshops were well received, the reliance on live facilitation limited consistency, scalability and sustainability across campuses and cohorts.
The challenge was to design a digital learning experience that preserved the organisation’s youth-led voice, psychological safety principles and authentic storytelling approach, while creating a flexible, modular course suitable for diverse university learners with varying cultural backgrounds, awareness levels and lived experiences.
The Learning Solution
Hungry Minds partnered closely with Consent Labs to design a flagship digital Consent Education course grounded in trauma-aware learning design, psychological safety and meaningful learner engagement.

The solution was intentionally designed to move beyond traditional “tick-box” compliance training by using youth-led storytelling, branching scenario videos and practical reflection activities that encouraged learners to apply concepts in realistic campus-based situations.
The learning journey was structured into three core modules:
- Understand – building shared foundations around consent, healthy relationships and gender-based violence
- Decide – applying learning through branching “choose your own adventure” style scenarios
- Do – supporting learners to take action, respond safely and engage in active bystander behaviour using the CARDS framework.
A major focus of the design was psychological safety. The course incorporated:
- upfront content warnings
- learner choice and pacing control
- visible support pathways
- glossary supports for unfamiliar language
- accessible and low-friction interactions
- modular design allowing learners to pause and resume easily.
The course also featured:
- custom illustrated interactions and scenario cards
- hotspot and pop-up activities
- reflective journalling prompts
- configurable university-specific support pathways
- pre/post confidence questions
- inclusive representation across gender, sexuality, culture and ability.
Designed for LMS integration and future scalability, the final architecture created a reusable design pattern that Consent Labs can adapt for future cohorts, institutions and education programs
The Outcome
The outcome was a strategically designed, trauma-aware online consent education experience that balanced compliance requirements with authentic learner engagement. The project provided Consent Labs with a scalable digital learning model that preserved the organisation’s youth-led identity while supporting broader institutional rollout across the higher education sector.

The resulting framework positioned Consent Labs to deliver more consistent learning experiences across universities while maintaining a strong focus on inclusion, psychological safety and behaviour change. The modular and configurable design also created opportunities for future program expansion and long-term sustainability across multiple delivery contexts.
